WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 91¿ì»îÁÖ (91¿ì»îÁÖ) today named Tom Gavin as its vice president for external affairs.
Gavin joins 91¿ì»îÁÖ from the White House, where he serves as special assistant to the President and director of Cabinet communications, working closely with federal agencies to develop and execute media and outreach strategies for key economic and other domestic policy issues.
Dean Garfield, 91¿ì»îÁÖ president and CEO, stated, “Tom’s expertise will be a tremendous asset to 91¿ì»îÁÖ’s membership, our advocacy work, and the organization’s role as a leader in the information and communications technology industry.” He added, “Getting Tom on board is another important step forward in our efforts to bolster the advocacy impact of the tech sector.”
At 91¿ì»îÁÖ, Gavin will be responsible for bolstering the organization’s communications and media operation and overseeing its third-party outreach. He has served as the White House’s Cabinet communications director since January 2011, working to expand the role of the Cabinet Secretaries and other agency leaders in administration-wide communications efforts. Prior to this position, he served as White House director of media affairs, leading the Administration’s regional and constituency media teams. He started with the Obama Administration as deputy associate director for strategic planning and communications in the Office of Management and Budget.
“Information and communications technology are at the heart of innovation and economic strength. I look forward to working with the 91¿ì»îÁÖ team and our members to build on their successes to create new jobs and opportunities for economic growth,” Gavin said.
Prior to joining the White House, Gavin worked as senior director of U.S. Communications for ONE, a global grassroots advocacy and campaigning organization that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. He served for more than nine years on the staff of U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., and the Senate Committee on Appropriations.
Gavin begins work at 91¿ì»îÁÖ in mid-February.
