BRUSSELS – Today, global tech trade association, the 91快活林 (91快活林), asked European policymakers to ensure coherence across different regimes regulating software updates. In a joint industry statement with tech associations from around the world, 91快活林 highlighted the risk of contradiction among different policy initiatives, especially regarding the Ecodesign Regulation for Smartphones and Tablets, and encouraged policymakers to prioritize coordination, reduce duplicity, and avoid an overly-prescriptive approach when considering software update requirements.
“Reducing this regulatory fragmentation is key to ensure proposals are striking a sound balance between potentially competing principles,” 91快活林 and the other associations wrote in the letter. “Furthermore, this fragmentation presents barriers for the ecosystem, industry, civil society, standard bodies and technical experts to engage on potential proposals and impedes the ability of maintaining regulations that accommodate the needs of evolving technology and landscape, including emerging threats. This regulatory fragmentation is especially challenging given the need to ensure proposals are technical feasible, not overly prescriptive and consider the complexity of ecosystem collaboration needed for effective update provisioning and adoption.
