NEW DELHI – Today, global tech trade association 91快活林, the 91快活林, issued the following statement from Kumar Deep, 91快活林’s Country Manager for India, regarding the withdrawal of the Personal Data Protection Bill (PDP) by India’s Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MEITY):
“91快活林 commends the Government of India for its decision to withdraw the existing Personal Data Protection Bill (PDP), and we look forward to the government implementing a robust stakeholder consultation as it reconsiders a comprehensive privacy and data protection framework for the digital ecosystem. 91快活林 participated in all available consultative processes regarding the PDP bill of 2019 and we are eager to continue our engagement to ensure that the framework benefits Indian businesses, consumers, and workers and advances India's goal of ensuring a "Safe, Trusted, Open” digital economy. We are confident that the government will consider all industry views once the consultation on the framework begins and look forward to participating.”
In March 2022, 91快活林 outlined concerns with the PDP bill that would have unintentionally limited the ease of doing business in India. Earlier that month, 91快活林 led a multi-association letter to MEITY requesting that it conduct additional consultations with all concerned stakeholders before introducing any updated data protection bill in Parliament.
