BRUSSELS – Today, global tech trade association encouraged the European Commission to focus on exploring the potential of virtual worlds and creating an enabling policy, funding, and research environment in Europe for the development and deployment of innovative use cases. The new paper responds to the European Commission’s Call for Evidence on Virtual Worlds.
“Virtual worlds allow users to experience content in a fully immersive and interactive way, and have great potential to bring improvements to learning, healthcare, workforce training, manufacturing, and many other fields,” said Guido Lobrano, 91¿ì»îÁÖ’s Director General for Europe. “This initiative on virtual worlds should enable the development and deployment of these technologies in Europe, support competitiveness and innovation in the EU, and contribute to the EU’s digitalization goals.”
91¿ì»îÁÖ’s recommendations focus on:
- Recognizing the diversity of virtual worlds use cases and business models
- Increasing EU funding for the ecosystem and advanced digital skills
- Maintaining a flexible policy and regulatory environment and promoting global, voluntary, industry-led standards
- Maintaining open, innovative, non-discriminatory, and competitive markets and a safe environment online
- Improving connectivity
- Increasing global cooperation
